Careers and diversity in research

Thank you for deciding to take part in this study! Please read the following information carefully before you start answering the questions.

What is the aim of this study? As part of a research project at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the study seeks to gain a better understanding of the conditions for researchers' careers in academia. The project investigates factors that promote and hinder academic careers, as well as working conditions, experiences of discrimination, physical and mental wellbeing, and personal attitudes. Your participation is very important so that as many different researchers as possible can be taken into account An intersectional perspective and participatory principles guide our approach. If you are interested in supporting us in the participatory process of the data evaluation, you can leave your contact details here. The project is funded by the Berlin University Alliance.

How will the survey work? In the survey, we will ask you to share your personal experiences at your university. In order to be able to map inequalities among researchers, one focus is on the complexity of sociodemographics. Therefore, the questionnaire begins with personal questions. These questions will be used to ask more in-depth questions. Your participation is voluntary and should take around 35 minutes. You can interrupt the survey at any time and complete it later. Make sure you use the same device to do this, otherwise it will no longer be possible to allocate your answers. You can skip individual questions or end the survey completely at any time. This will not result in any disadvantage to you.

Are there any possible risks? Depending on your personal situation, some questions may be sensitive. This applies in particular to information on mental health and any experiences of discrimination in the workplace. We kindly ask you to assess your own mental health in order to participate in this study. Below you will find a list of possible contact points.

How is your data protected? Your answers to our questions will be analysed statistically and for purely scientific purposes. In accordance with the statutory data protection regulations, all your answers will be treated as strictly confidential and will only be used in anonymised form. Personal details (socio-demographics) are stored separately from the other information. This means that the answers cannot be traced back to you personally, not even indirectly. All project participants are bound to confidentiality and compliance with data protection requirements in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The transmitted data will only be used for the scientific purpose of the study. The project has been coordinated with the data protection authorities at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. If you wish, you can receive the first results of the study if you indicate this at the end of the survey. The e-mail address that you can provide for this purpose is technically recorded separately from your answers and will not be linked.

Do you have any questions or comments?

For questions of any kind, please contact mirjam.fischer@hu-berlin.de.

The survey is configured as anonymous. No personal information about you will be stored in the survey responses unless explicitly requested in a question. Please do not leave any personal information in free text fields. Due to the respondent group, personal filter questions, specific answer combinations and/or additional knowledge, it cannot be ruled out that in exceptional cases, it may be possible to draw conclusions about individual persons. We have therefore taken the following measures to prevent this:

  • For filter questions, you have the option at any time to select the answer option “no answer” or not to provide any information and to leave free text fields blank.
  • Your details will be treated confidentially. The transmission of data in online surveys is encrypted (TLS). Only the six employees of the project are authorized to evaluate the data; they have no access to other non-public databases of the university. The data set will be made available anonymously to the science community after the project is completed. It will be obtainable on request to Prof. Mirjam Fischer and will be delivered in compliance with data protection regulations.
  • The survey data will not be linked to other university databases and will be evaluated in anonymized and aggregated form. It is not possible to draw conclusions about individual persons from the presentation of the results.
  • The procedure has been agreed with the HU's data protection officer.

Information about internal data processing / rights of participants

The online survey collects personal information about your career, attitudes, mental health, and socio-demographics. Your information in the online survey will be processed as follows:

  • The data from the online survey conducted with LimeSurvey will be stored in a central CMS database (MySQL) and used for further processing (e.g., data analysis) in the HU Box. A backup copy of the data set is stored on two external data carriers (socio-demographic characteristics are stored separately from the other answer), which remain untouched and can be used for restoration if necessary. Both will be irretrievably deleted at the latest upon completion of the project (expected on October 31, 2026).
  • The data set will be made available anonymously to the Scientific Community project upon request to Prof. Mirjam Fischer in compliance with data protection regulations.
  • The data will be evaluated using the anonymized data set. The results will be used in academic conferences and other scientific publications. Only anonymized research results that do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about individuals will be published. All project staff who have access to personal data or raw data are obliged to maintain confidentiality and comply with the data protection requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • Your consent to participate in the survey is voluntary. There are no disadvantages to not participating. You can refuse to answer individual questions or revoke your consent at any time without giving reasons, e.g., by closing the survey without submitting it. Once you have completed the survey and submitted your answers, it is no longer possible to revoke your consent, as your answers can no longer be traced back to you.
  • If you provide us with your email address after completing the survey, it will be processed separately from the previous survey responses. Your registration for our newsletter will only be used to send you the results of the study. Your registration in our contact list for participants in the evaluation will be used to contact you regarding your participation. Your email address will then be deleted and will not be passed on to third parties.
  • With regard to the processing of personal data, in addition to the right to revoke consent, you have a fundamental right to information, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection within the framework of the legal requirements vis-à-vis the responsible party. Please contact the project leader (mirjam.fischer@hu-berlin.de) for this purpose.

During the online survey, technical data (cookies and log data) of the participants is processed. When the LimeSurvey survey system is accessed, the participant's browser transmits data from the accessing device to LimeSurvey, as is the case with every website access.

  • Website address accessed and website from which access is made (referrer URL)
  • Date and time of access
  • IP address of the user
  • HTTP status code
  • Amount of data accessed
  • Browser type and version / operating system used

The processing of this data is necessary for the provision of the website and also serves to perform public tasks of Humboldt University of Berlin (Art. 6 (1) (c) GDPR in conjunction with § 19 (4) TDDDG and Art. 6 (1) (e) DSGVO in conjunction with § 3 BlnDSG, § 4 BerlHG). Only the system administrators of LimeSurvey have access to this log data. The log data is not compared with the survey data or passed on to third parties. There is no way to link responses and participants, not even by the administration. In addition, browser cookies are stored to enable participants to interrupt and later continue their participation.
